Tales From The Tragically Unhip
So I’m at Spinning the other day and usually Terri (the Spinning instructor that takes delight in kicking yo Sista’s ass) plays mostly Hip Hop stuff that I really don’t enjoy. I tune it out and go into my little Spin Zone anyway…however…this song came on and I dug it so I asked (knowing I was at the risk of sounding like someone ready for Assisted Living)
“Who is that?” said I.
”Duffy” says Terri the Spinning Instructor.
“Who?” I repeated. Two much younger women both looked at me and simeltaneously said “DUFFY” as if to say “Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuh you owld lady.”
There was a boy, probably 17 on the bike next to me and God love him, he turned to me and said “I have no idea who Duffy is, if that makes you feel better.” What a good boy. His mama should be proud.
So, I came home and looked Duffy up on the Itunes, not knowing the name of the song, but, figured it out and I dig me some Duffy. I’m sure I like it cause it has an Austin Powers/Quincy Jones-Soul Bossa Nova element to it…sorta retrow-bay-bay-yaaaaaaaaaaah.

Duffy - Mercy [ OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO ] Video said this on September 10, 2008 at 9:51 pm |
Yes, Duffy kicks it. I downloaded all of Rockferry for my tragically unhip hubs and it fits right in with his 60’s / 70’s Mix on his Ipod. Bonus is that it’s just modern enough that I like it too. Almost magically delicious!
She’s the second level of Amy Winehouse from last year. That same British-we love your soulfull, funky music America- kind of performer that repackages and resells classic sounds back to us from a younger generation.
She’ll be in Nashville soon. I don’t think she can pull it off live, I think there’s a lot of studio magic in that album. But it is ear catching.
Once I learned that Sharon Jones-from Sharon and the DapKings coached Amy Winehouse on her singing delivery on her album I just went straight to Sharon Jones’s own recordings. There’s some new soul for you.
Studio schmudio…got a good beat and easy to spin to. I watched a video from some British show where she was live and it sounded ok to me.
I’m about ready to vote for Sharon Jones for president, myself. Lordy mercy.
Sista, you’re not the only one who likes that Duffy child. I heard her “Mercy” in the store about a month ago and went around singing it the rest of the day until I could get to iTunes and buy it. I wound up buying the whole album, and it’s pretty good. I’m just always glad to hear folks who appreciate the old stuff and put a little bit of their new spin on it.
I just found Duffy as well. She a cleaned up version of Amy Winehouse.
I need to check out Sharon Jones…I always like the older, more original version of anything.
I’ve been on a Staples kick this week. PBS ran a FANTASTIC documentary on Stax Records and Mavis Staples, Otis, all of them…so good you could cry.
GF, I’m like you…I’m glad to see the younguns coming up have an appreciation for yesterday.
