I meant to say something about this earlier…Brother In Law Smiff is playing a solo gig down at the Station Inn to commemorate the release of his new cd Five Flat RocksI’m pretty pumped to see the BIL’s outfit perform.  Oh…the BIL’s name is Billy Smith.  He’s a fabulous songwriter, performer and all around dude.  The music commences at 9 o’clock.

Maybe he’ll tell the story of carrying Bill Monroe’s teeth to the dentist or one of his other tales.  He’s got some doozies.

Here’s a clip of the signature title as done by the Del McCoury Band.  I do think that of all the millions (ok not millions) of songs Billy has written, that this one is one of my favorites.  I believe it was co-written with my sister in law Marilyn and her former…never mind…it’s complicated.  Great song.  Come see Billy if you aint got nothing else going on.

Viva Viagra

A couple months back, Mr. S. got called in, with his bandmates, to audition for a Viagra commercial.  Yep…Viva Viagra.  From what I understand, every Bluegrass picker in town was there to audition.  I don’t know how many in all came to audition, but, out of all those that showed up, only one real Bluegrass Dude was chosen. (It was not the Mister…dammit.)

Please go here to see the new Viagra commercial and see if you recognize anybody.

I think it’s pretty dang swell that Uncle Bobo will make him some nice change on this commercial.  What I DON’T get is why on earth they had to bring in actors to be Bluegrass people.  I’m sorry, but, Bluegrass music’s got some charming dudes who probably would be able to sell some blue pills.   I’d have loved to see any of the Bluegrass guys on that commercial.  Lord knows Bluegrass pickers enjoy the benefits of the stuff…I could name several who could be poster boys for Viagra, but, I won’t cause this is a Christian blog and we don’t gossip here.  Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

**Update-I lied…there are a couple real musicians on there I just didn’t know them.  Kenny Kosek on fiddle and Eric Weissberg, (he was part of that famous “Dueling Banjos” from Deliverance, ya know…I know of Weissberg, but, obviously wouldn’t know him if I ran into him down at the Kmarts.

Busted Flat In Baton Rouge…

This is what I’ve been listening to a LOT on the ol’ Ipod of late.

Dale Ann Bradley is one of my most favorite-ist girl singers.

Come and Listen In To The Radio Station…

I didn’t realize that the Intimate Evening With Stubby and the Grascals will be broadcast live on WSM and on XM radio.  Thanks to my pals at the Bluegrass Blog for that little tidbit. I’ll be listening.

Ran So Fast That The Hounds Couldn’t Catch ’em

I just received the absolute most wonderful, coolest phone call ever known to man.   Alan O’Bryant called me, played “The 8th of January” on his banjo and wished me a happy 8th of nashville_bluegrass_band_20.gifJanuary.  How cool is that?  So, in the spirit of Old Hickory, I bid you the same.

This tune always makes me think of me and my cousin Buddy when we were just little folks, listening to this 45 record on his record player.  Jammin’ to Johnny Horton….timeframe about this time this picture was taken.

Extra Crispy

The Grascals have a new and improved website…praise the Lord and shout halleluyer.

I Should Be Asleep…

Mr. Smiff and Them will be live on your radio airwaves today at 1:00 Eastern Time.  Maybe it won’t be “airwaves” for most of us.  Perhaps “Interwaves” would be a better term.  They will be on that fantastically, wonderful WNCW out of North Carolina.

I’m considering a big decision tomorrow.  Nothing life-threatening or anything like that.  In the Grand Scheme, it’s not brain surgery.  It’s common sense.  I’m going to sleep on it and see how I feel about it in the morning.  I’m not one to be stressed out, but, of late, I am VERY stressed out and it just doesn’t bode well for me and those who live with me.

Saturday is looking to be totally action packed with the School Carnival.  I’m a bad mom.  I did not sign up to work at the “fun-filled” carnival.  Anybody who’s read me any length of time can figure that one out.  I’m not good at playing PTO/Muffia. I’m not able to play along and say “Hiiiiiii-iiii! How are yeeewwwww?” To the other parents.  I dread having to go to this thing in the first place.  I managed to skip it last year. No such luck this year.

The Manchild is in a school play this weekend. First show was tonight.  I had to miss it cause of school but even his sister commented on how her brudder “stood out” even though he doesn’t have a major role.  That is quite a huge statement coming from the Holy Tara.

I may actually hit two school plays Saturday…the MC’s and a friend of mine from church is in “Brigadoon.” This girl…teenaged girl, I think she’s a senior…amazingly talented.  I hope I can get away from the Carnival and see her.

Ok, I’m really going to bed now.
